This is, obviously, and as the name says, for *citations*, not a template for 
bibliographies.

You're confusing templates and tex preview.

BibDesk is not meant to be a program for generating bibtex, but to manage 
bibtex data. It uses bibtex, for preview purposes, primarily as a way to check 
the data.

TeX is complicated. That's because it's very versatile. You misunderstand the 
purpose of these programs.
