IMHO, it is about the competitive scaleout solutions they can put together: HW -> interconnect, fault tolerance and QOS. SW -> communication libraries(accelerated collectives) and application optimization with scalable frameworks. And to protect their current world wide portfolio of customers (HPE, SGI, CRAY) for upcoming large scale deals. Wrt AI, MLPERF training is a clear example of strong scaling AI with both data and model parallelism, very much the same as in traditional domain decomposition applications + streamed big data.

I would kind of hope for something like “CRAY – How Fast Do You Want to Go?” or something like that to echo back to their long history of “just make it fast” > > From: Beowulf on behalf of Jim Cownie > Date: Friday, September 27, 2019 at 7:23 AM > To: Scott Atchley > Cc: "beowulf@beowulf.org" > Subject: [EXTERNAL] Re: [Beowulf] HPE completes Cray acquisition > > > > > On 25 Sep 2019, at 18:38, Scott Atchley > wrote: > > These companies compliment each other. HPE is working on some very cool technologies and their purchasing power should help reduce costs. Cray has experience with the leadership-scale systems, several generations of HPC interconnects, and optimizing scientific software. > > We are waiting to find out which logo(s) will be on the Frontier when it lands. > > > I expect that will be the one that seems to be all over announcements > > [https://6lli539m39y3hpkelqsm3c2fg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Cray-HPE-company-400x.jpg] > > > > On Wed, Sep 25, 2019 at 12:09 PM Christopher Samuel > wrote: > Cray joins SGI as part of the HPE stable: > > https://www.hpe.com/us/en/newsroom/press-release/2019/09/hpe-completes-acquisition-of-supercomputing-leader-cray-inc.html > > > As part of the acquisition, Cray president and CEO Peter Ungaro, will > join HPE as head of the HPC and AI business unit in Hybrid IT. > > All the best, > Chris > -- > Chris Samuel : http://www.csamuel.org/ : Berkeley, CA, USA > _______________________________________________ > Beowulf mailing list, Beowulf@beowulf.org sponsored by Penguin Computing > To change your subscription (digest mode or unsubscribe) visit https://beowulf.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/beowulf > _______________________________________________ > Beowulf mailing list, Beowulf@beowulf.org sponsored by Penguin Computing > To change your subscription (digest mode or unsubscribe) visit https://beowulf.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/beowulf > > -- Jim > James Cownie > > Mob: +44 780 637 7146 > > > > > _______________________________________________ > Beowulf mailing list, Beowulf@beowulf.org sponsored by Penguin Computing > To change your subscription (digest mode or unsubscribe) visit https://beowulf.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/beowulf _______________________________________________ Beowulf mailing list, Beowulf@beowulf.org sponsored by Penguin Computing To change your subscription (digest mode or unsubscribe) visit https://beowulf.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/beowulf
