Might I suggest trying Open-MPI? It doesn't need mpd and has some good
diagnostic messages as well as integration into batch systems like Slurm
and Torque so you don't need to tell it what nodes to use, it will learn
that from them instead.
I second this. MPICH and MVAPICH are allegedly faster than Open MPI (but
I've never confirmed this for myself), but I find OpenMPI easier to
administer, it has lots of excellent documentation on the website, and
it's mailing list is very helpful.
