Simulation supplants lots of real-world material testing, not to mention the 
efficiencies eked out by CFD in various applications.  So, an argument could be 
made that HPC is environmentally friendly.  Although, work does expand to fill 
all (cpu)* time.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
