/boot is in /dev/sdb1. When mounted that directory is empty but when unmounted fsck shows 10 files in it taking up about 12Mb.
Forgot to mention that there were no errors when fsck was run on the partitions holding / and /home. So the losses of /boot and /bin does not look like it resulted from file system corruption.
