Re. Putting bleeding edge packages on production systems I was once told to put a new versiion of bash on an SGI Ultraviolet, running SLES.
Next time the system wouldn't boot. Thank Seymour I had the systems admin skills to boot single user and force a downgrade of the RPM. The lesson- what SEEMS like an innocent change can have far reaching consequences.
