As an aside, I would guess most people know this tool, but if you don't install 
 and have a close look at the hardware layout of your systems:

http://www.open-mpi.org/projects/hwloc/

Install the hwloc package and run 'lstopo' to look at the system topology. Also 
can show where your IO and graphics cards are.
(Yes I KNOW they are somewhere inside the box - but in a big system placement 
of cards like that can be relevant).

numactl --hardware   and  watch numastat are your friends also.
