I've worked in places with everything from 12"-18" under the floor to ones where you could stand up underneath the floor. The latter are more pleasant to work in, although it really needs two people then, unless you want to get very good at climbing up and down the ladder. For the former, you just pull up all the tiles except the ones the equipment is standing on, and step from hole to hole. A lot more bending down and threading stuff between holes.
