I used libhugetlbfs today with success, followed more or less this recipe: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/systems/library/es-lop-leveragepages/ Huge malloc's could then take advantage of the huge page support on your CPU (2MB on x86_64) and you do not need any kernel/apps recompilation.
