Other mailing lists like GridEngine (or other resource managers), OpenMPI, or various applications/OSes might also be helpful. Google searching names usually provides a list of mailing list entries. Of course, some of us are less social than others, especially w/ respect to mailing lists, so don't let an absence of correspondence sway your decision too heavily. For instance, I read this list religiously but seldom post. On the other hand, seeing your potential candidate ask very basic, beginner questions on a mailing list within the last few months might be a bad sign. I think that for UNIX/Linux/HPC Systems Administration, mailing lists can be a gold mine of information about candidates. In some instances, you can get an accurate picture of how the candidate resolves issues or attacks projects.
