i think it really does depend on the disk you get. i've had a consumer (IDE) disk recording cctv 24*7 for 3 years without fail touch wood. i think the margin between the disks now is growing smaller and smaller. our new back up system at work uses consumer disks in a raid 5 array.

    My suggestion was that you ask a system integrator who actually sells
    a lot of enterprise drives.
