Cool. mpiBLAST also uses mmap'ed IO though. That hasn't changed. They just spread the IO to each process to take advantage of the parallel file systems.
We have a nice RPM build for mpi-BLAST-pio that a number of folks are using. You can grab it from http://downloads.scalableinformatics.com/downloads/mpiblast/ . And a shameless plug for mpiHMMer: http://www.mpihmmer.org/ while we are at it :)
