Shouldn't be necessary on Ubuntu these days:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 8.04.1 \n \l

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dlocate /etc/profile.d
base-files: /etc/profile.d
