if you're operating at the component level it's a question which core logic chipsets are in use.

In the amd case all socket F cpu's support ecc.

In the intel case. the uniprocessor xeon chipsets like 3000 and 3200 support unbuffered ecc ddr2 dimms. all 5000 chipsets support ecc fbdimms. The older 7xxx xeon supporting chipsets support ddr or ddr2 registerd dimms with ecc.

only with the single socket intel lga775 systems is there serious ambiguity at this point.
