I should just point out that on our 4 year old Intel P4 cluster we run 
CentOS5 with the kernels out of the CentOS Plus repository (to get 
decent filesystem support) and on our SLES9 Power5 cluster we run the 
packaged kernel (as upgrading to a current version is far too much of 
a leap).

Also on our NFS servers we run Debian Etch with the packaged kernel 
(which works very well for us).
