I think the gzip'ed image is about 24MB and you don't have to access
/dev over nfs.

Ah thanks for noticing this, hadn't realized this timing problem yet!
well, 128M of traffic to boot is pretty extreme. I haven't tcpdumped it,
but it looks like around 2-4MB is all that's needed using the NFS-root approach.
