The first parameter to split is a regex. The "[" character is a
functional regex character.
You can write it as:
my @refs = split /\[/, $references;
or as:
my @refs = split /[[]/, $references;

It is actually much easier to think that you need to check the
documentation of split. You probably believe in homeopathy too, or were
you just tired?
