Then used unshift to add it to the array.
unshift @array, $pound;
Seems to have done the trick which is all I was after.
Just a note that makes it so you don't have to create a var for a
onetime thing (which you should be my()ing BTW ;p) and makes it one line
shorter:
unshift @characters, chr(156);
