The backslash disappears immediately as part of the usual double-quotish
interpolation.

Nope -- just the double-quotes.
% touch '/tmp/path with spaces'
% cat glob.pl
my %pats = (
good => '/tmp/path\ with\ space*',
bad => "/tmp/path\ with\ space*",
ugly => "/tmp/path\\ with\\ space*"
);
local ($\, $,) = ("\n", " :: ");
while (my ($k,$v) = each %pats) {
