Here is the problem.  When @columns is empty, it returns undef, and you
can't do %{ +undef }.  So, do this:

  while (my $href = shift @columns) {
    # then use $href->{...}
    # or do:
    my %hash = %$href;
    ...
  }

But I'd just use $href.
