There's not qm() operator Joseph. It's:
$safe = quotemeta ($string);
or
$safe = "embedded \Q$string\E call";
where the latter is the same as
$safe = "embedded " . quotemeta ($string) . " call";
Also, qr() won't protect any metacharacters for you. It's just a chance
to force compilation of a regex away from the (implied or explicit)
binding operators like =~.
