if ($str =~ /\A\d{6}\z/) { ... }
The \A matches the beginning of the string, \d{6} matches 6 digits, and
the \z matches the end of the string.
If you meant "characters" instead of "digits", don't use a regex at all.
if (length($str) == 6) { ... }
