Read about the @+ array in perldoc perlvar. You will have to escape
the '@' otherwise it will try to interpolate @+.
Did you try it out? If it is uneccessary why does this happen?

while (<STDIN>) {
chomp;
s/@+$//;
print "$_\n";
}

abcd@@
It outputs
abcd@@
