I could be wrong, but I thought tr/// and y/// were only for
characters. I think you might want:
my %entity = (
'<' => '<',
'>' => '>',
'&' => '&',
);
my $item = "<blah>";
$item =~ s/([<>&])/$entity{$1}/ge;
