You may also be interested in checking out the RaiseError attribute of any
DBI handle...
$dsn = 'DBI:mysql:dbname'; # not sure what this looks like for InterBase
$dbh = DBI->connect( $dsn, 'username', 'password' );
$dbh->{RaiseError} = 1;
