I think, problem code is
```
if($buf eq chr hex $xhtmlbegin[$j + 1]) {
$doread = 1;
$j = $j + 1;
} else {
if($j == 0) {
$doread = 1;
} else {
#this line is very suspicious
$j = $next[$j];
}
}
```
$next[$j] may be undefined and after that you cannot safely compare $j wint
numeric value 0.
If you provide real xml data, we can reproduce error more accurately.
