We have a Google Summer of Code project that will wrap-up soon that provides a cross-platform (Linux/Mac/Windows) GUI app that boots a BeagleBone from ROM (ie., no flash/SD content dependency), turns the flash into a mass-storage device and allows you to write to it.
There are some known issues, but I'd like to get some straight-up feedback as the app is presented on its github page. Check it out! We stil aren't able to set the required usb configuration for spl device on Windows. So, uboot transfer is still pending on Windows. Not sure, if they can help with uboot.
