I agree and it is highly appreciated what is being done.
Actually, we are working on a worst-case-execution-time module using BCEL. Is is useful for real-time systems. Perhaps it can be discussed if these classes fits into BCEL somewhere? It is not GPL code at the moment, but it could probably be if one of the committers e-mails me offline and take a discussion on the topic.
Best,
Rasmus

That is the one. Perhaps i mistated, there certainly was talk of putting that on the web site, but perhaps it never was.

BCEL will continue to be supported; myself, Torsten, and a few others fix bugs, etc, and will probably move forward with 1.5 support after the 5.2 release is done. Like all open source projects, whether or not BCEL dies out, depends on whether folks show up to work on it. I intend to do what i can so that doesn't happen, and perhaps others will as well, but as has been said before, 'the proof is in the puddin'. We shall see.

Hi Dave,

Where is the BCEL website? I only know about http://jakarta.apache.org/bcel/
But you say that:

"The advice on the bcel website is that new projects should use asm"

That is pretty serious stuff for some of us who are using BCEL. Does that mean that BCEL is dying out?

Best,
Rasmus

Some work has been done regarding parsing of annotations, however it was decided that this change shouldn't go in a point release, but instead wait for a bcel 6.0 release. The advice on the bcel website is that new projects should use asm. For existing projects, depending on how difficult it is to switch over your code to asm, decides, i guess, whether it is worth it for you. Generally speaking you will get better support and more timely releases there.

Hi,

Do you have a roadmap for JDK 5 features? Say, this year, next year, 2 years or any date, but we definitily need an approximate date to decide if we stay with
BCEL or move to a competitor like ASM.

Thanks,

Erik Bengtson

Quoting Dave Brosius <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

5.2 will be released shortly, Until then you can get the latest from svn,
using this url:

http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/jakarta/bcel/trunk
