Good morning folks,
We're currently working on a feature update to BBEdit 12, which
includes a number of new features, as well as fixes for
previously reported issues.
Testing is currently underway, and we have a stable pre-release
version ready for use.
Note that this is a _pre-release_ version. The intent is to fix
bugs and address areas of improvement based on what our
customers have reported. However, since the software is at this
point not fully tested, there _may_ be bugs and regressions.
If this prospect makes you nervous, then sticking with the
public release versions is your best course of action. Nobody
will be offended if you choose to do so; you're under no
obligation to install and use anything but a public release. :-)
Complete change notes to date for all the pre-release builds in
this cycle are available here:
<https://s3.amazonaws.com/BBSW-download/notes-12.5.txt>
The change notes are organized into additions, changes, and
fixes, and are annotated where appropriate with case numbers. So
if you recognize a number corresponding to a support case that
was opened for you, you can now verify that it's been fixed
correctly. Please take the time to review the changes before
using the new build -- it'll be worth your time.
============================================================================
version 12.5 (411027) (2018-09-30)
* This version of BBEdit requires macOS 10.12.6 or later. It will
not run on previous versions of macOS or Mac OS X.
Additions
---------
o (none in this build)
Changes
-------
* [DOC] When running on macOS Mojave (10.14) and later, BBEdit
will override the “Match application appearance to selected
editor color scheme” option when you have selected the “Dark”
appearance in the General system preferences. This is done so
that BBEdit's primary interface can match the system appearance
(dialog boxes, palettes, and so forth) will all use Dark Mode
when it is turned on system-wide.
If there is some reason that you would prefer that BBEdit's
presentation always match the selected editor color scheme
irrespective of whether Dark Mode is on, you can change this:
`defaults write com.barebones.bbedit
UseSystemAppearanceWhenInDarkMode -bool NO`
We recommend restarting BBEdit after you change this setting.
* [DOC] The "Appearance" preferences pane has been reorganized,
moving the "Match appearance" check box to the top and making
room for an annotation below it. The "Show icons" setting for
sidebars has been squeezed out and moved to the Expert
Preferences help (the setting is still honored).
Fixes
-----
* [NFR] [360858] Fixed regression in which using the "Find All"
menu command or keyboard equivalent while the Find window was
active would not correctly search in the text window behind the
Find window as it should have done.
* [NFR] Twiddled some configuration bits in the "Command" window
so that it goes to the background with the rest of the
application.
* [NFR] The color list in the Text Colors preferences will use an
appearance appropriate for the color scheme being displayed,
mostly so that the outline disclosures are visible.
* [NFR] The color list in the color scheme editor windows will use
an appearance appropriate for the color scheme being displayed,
mostly so that the outline disclosures are visible.
* [360856] Fixed bug in which `bbdiff` would not correctly resolve
home-relative file references (e.g. `~/path/to/some/file.txt`)
before asking the application to diff them; this would
result in
a -1701 error being reported by the tool.
* [360853] Fixed bug in which the Unix Shell Script syntax
coloring would be confused by here-strings (`<<<`).
* [360954] Worked around an OS behavior (Radar 44894340) which
prevented the application from remembering that files from
`/private/etc/` (and probably some other directories) were opened
when quitting the application.
* Made a change to the Ruby language module so that it no longer
suggests `BEGIN` or `END` as completions.
*fin*
One final note: If you run into a bug in a pre-release version,
PLEASE DO NOT REPORT THE BUG TO THE LIST. This includes asking
about whether others have seen the same problem. Instead, please
send a bug report to <[email protected]> and we will deal
with it there. This will help us keep the list discussion on
topic and productive for all list members.
The package can be downloaded from our web server:

Enjoy,
R.

Someday I'll look back on all this and laugh... until they
sedate me.
