I believe if you uncheck 'Auto-indent' under Preferneces --> Editor
Defaults, you will get the behavior you are looking for.
I should also point out that you might find it useful to use the
Markup --> Tidy --> Reflow Document feature for doing that kind of
work (indenting client code that wasn't properly indented to begin
with).
