However, I'm wondering about actual _autocompletion_, and I'm not talking about the template-style-clippings. While writing code I want to autocomplete variables, or function names. SubEthaEdit does it quite well, it seems to generate an index from variables and functions in the open files, and in some cases (PHP for example) has an index of the API's functions. Does this even exist in BBEdit? I could easily be missing it.

There are many hidden features in BBEdit, but I believe this one is still missing. There is a freeware utility by Michael Tsai which works alongside BBEdit providing this functionality. It is called BBAutoComplete and you can find it at <http://c-command.com/ bbautocomplete/>. I use it and it works well.
