Javier,
Thanks for your reply. The problem I have is that the machine
connected to the tape drive is a Windows machine which serves
other purposes too. So that is why I was thinking of copying the
volumes along with the catalog database to this and write to tape.
Hello Waqar: in my vision you have simpler possibilities than
emulating Bacula Copy features in a nasty Windows Machine. E.g.: use
your tape drive and a BaculaSD within a Linux VM.
Starwind Tape Redirector can be used to establish the tape drive as a
iSCSI target on the Windows machine. Alternatively, rather than using a
second SD, a Hyper-V VM running Linux can setup the tape drive as an
iSCSI target. Either way, the drive can be accessed via iSCSI so that
only a single SD is needed.

For the Copy to Tape:
I think you must install a second Storage Daemon in the second
server and make the copy/migrate jobs through Bacula, not moving
the files 'manually'. You could find the info into Bacula Docs.
Restoring:
Yes, it's possible recover data with only the Volume, you must use
the bscan utility from Bacula to recreate the Catalog.
Retention:
I would use a minimum of two months Retention period for recovery
the data easily from local Disk (if the disk space is not
critical) and use Tape Storage (on second server) only for
'archive' purposes.
All the info into Bacula Docs !

Hi All,
I plan to use bacula to back up Windows machines, a mix of
Server 2003 and Server 2008. My plan is as follows:
1 – run the grandfather, father, son rotation scheme. I will
have a full backup at the start of the month, then incremental
every day, diffs on a Saturday
2 – Once the month is over, I will copy the full backup
volumes onto a tape drive machine to be written to tape (not
using bacula to write to tape, but a separate machine which I
have connected to a tape drive) The reason for not connecting
the tape drive directly to the bacula machine is because I
have run out of card slots so I will copy the volumes over to
another machine and write to tape from there
My question is, which data exactly must I move to the machine
connected to the tape drive to write to tape. Will just the
volume be enough or must I also dump the catalog and copy the
sql file over and write both to tape.
Is it possible to restore data from a full backup without the
catalog/config files/bsr. Just the volume.
Also I am confused about retention periods. I want to only
keep data for 1 month (over 1 month will be written to tape).
Should my File retention be 31 days and the Job retention be
the same?
Thanks in advance!
