Sounds the like umount is failing. I think you need to look at the output of
the command, e.g. replace /bin/umount by a script:
#!/bin/sh
/bin/umount $1 2>&1 | tee /tmp/umount.txt
Also, try using lsof (as root) to see if anything is keeping the mount point
open.
