I would start at a lower level than that.
Are you 100% sure /dev/sg6 is your autochanger?
tapeinfo -f /dev/sg6
will tell you.
Here is what I get for my changer:
# tapeinfo -f /dev/autochanger1

Vendor ID: 'EXABYTE '
Product ID: 'MAGNUM 224 '

It is /dev/autochanger1 for me because I wrote a udev rule to create a
symlink to what ever device it finds that is the changer.
Now after you have that working. test mtx
# mtx -f /dev/autochanger1 status
Storage Changer /dev/autochanger1:2 Drives, 24 Slots ( 1 Import/Export )
