On FreeBSD, I'd tell you to look at iostat. Output looks something
like this:
$ iostat
tty twed0 cd0 sa0
cpu
tin tout KB/t tps MB/s KB/t tps MB/s KB/t tps MB/s us ni sy
in id
0 30 31.02 34 1.03 0.00 0 0.00 62.99 1 0.08 3 0 2
0 95
iostat -w 1 will output one of those lines every second.
