I don't think so, provided you fix all the places where they occur...
all your FDs, SDs, possibly monitoring... but existing backups reference
only volume IDs and client IDs.
Volume IDs are not a problem as they can be assigned to a new SD
automatically when you've got your Media Type and Pool settings correct.
Client IDs will probably change when you create a new client - which
happens implicitly when you introduce a new name. The address does not
play a role there.
So I think it's safe to change SD and DIR names, but when you change the
client names you will either have to re-run full backups, or manually
fiddle with the catalog.
You will not lose backups, as long as you know which new client
corresponds to which old client.
So, I'm quite sure that you can change SD and DIR names as much as you
like, but should take care with FD names.
