Yes, Bacula does a "list" command, which may take time on some autochangers.
Most can immediately return the inventory since it is done at boot time. I
think the problem that Eric is trying to address is that Bacula reads all 180
of his tapes attempting to label them. That is a very time consuming
operation. If the slots=xxx works as I believe it does, Bacula should not
need to read all Volumes even though it has received back a full list of
slots.
I think we need to hear Eric's response before we can fully understand his
problem and his proposed solution ...
