That sounds like a good plan.

Why not using LVM so this problem just does not happen at all?
This is currently part of my plan. I plan to buy another hard drive and set it up with LVM. I will then copy everything from the old drive to the new LVM drive. I will then mount the LVM drive to the same place as the old drive. Next add the old drive to the LVM and grow my partition onto it.
