We don't have any specific listing.  In general, all recent versions of MySQL 
have been very good, but the most recent one put out by Sun was broken at 
least on a Solaris platform.  I am currently using MySQL 5.0.51a.

IMO building yourself is always dangerous unless you are an expert with the 
particular program (maybe you are with MySQL).

I suspect your problem is with the MySQL build.  Martin's detailed analysis is 
very good, and he has probably pinpointed the cause of your problems.  I 
suggest you follow his advice.
