smb is not ideal accross any sort of WAN or slow link.. smb is very much a
LAN filesystem layer..

rsync is very functional, even on vista.  You can create a user specifically
to run rsync  and give them read access to the directories you want to
backup.

Some people do have problems with rsync on windows but I have setup many
machines with various windows from 2000 to vista sp2 and never ever had an
issue.  I use deltacopy
<http://www.aboutmyip.com/AboutMyXApp/DeltaCopy.jsp>for rsync as it
installs easily and just works...
