my first attempt was a goof, I linked the wrong way but by leaving the
topDir as /var/lib/backuppc and adding two links from cpool to
raid/cpool & pc to raid/pc it now works fine with no error messages, so
I think this must be the same solution as Eric used.

No the only change was to topDir via the cgi interface.
