If you happen to have a WinXP/Vista/7 installation lying around, hit Win+R (for WinXP) or Win (otherwise) and type "ping google.com". A terminal pops up automatically.
If you do the same on Unity Alt-F2 Dash, you'll just create a zombie process - not very nice.
