entity conversion woes and xpathscript

Hi

I have just moved our XML -> HTML processing system from RH 6.2 (not a 
typo) to Suse enterprise server.  The change meant that we moved from 
perl v5.6.1  to v5.8.3.

In the process, my xpath scripts which used to take xml input of

   Mölnlycke

and output as:

   M�lnlycke

now outputs it like this:

   M󶬮ycke

I have never seen this before! It is devouring stuff outside the entity!
Any ideas ?
