Have you tried setting some of the AxisFault fields explicitely?
AxisFault myFault = AxisFault.makeFault(e);
myFault.setFaultReason("some reason...");
myFault.setFaultDetailString("some info...");
throw myFault;
I'm not sure if it'll work.
