As I reported several weeks ago, the CVS version of Automake has a
bug that it installs the scripts `depcomp' and `compile' into each
$(srcdir)s instead of $(top_srcdir) when the aux dir is not defined
explicitly. That is not still fixed, so I took a look at the code, to
fix that myself.
I found that the problem could be fixed very easily by the following
patch. This is in the function `require_file_internal'.

Of course, this introduces another problem, that is, some scripts
like `mdate-sh' are traditionally assumed to be under $(srcdir) rather
than $(top_srcdir). Which is better, leaving them under $(srcdir) by
setting @require_file_paths (or @config_aux_path) to $relative_dir
temporarily, or installing them under $(top_srcdir) by modifying their
paths in generated `Makefile.in's?
