Debian's run-parts tool, that runs all of the scripts in a particular directory, limits the files that it runs to those whose names consist entirely of upper and lower case letters, digits, underscores, and hyphens. This is useful because it avoids running "scripts" that are actually backups (*~) or Emacs auto-save files (#*#) or revision-control (*,v) or whatever.
