I don’t believe I wrote it, I can trace it back in vcs history to 2005 when it 
was imported into a git repository from a bitkeeper where history becomes 
murky.  For example, the migrated history does weird things:

rename from aalib/aalib_1.4rc5.bb
rename to packages/autoconf/autoconf-2.59/autoreconf-exclude.patch

Yeah, I doubt that’s what happened.

My hunch is that the non-trivial logic around running aclocal meant just 
setting ACLOCAL=true didn’t quite do enough, but we’re now officially Before My 
Time, sorry.
