these are `Preset Output Variables', i.e., substituted in Makefile, but
(except for srcdir) not necessarily defined at configure time.
if test "$sac_cv_cc_environment" = mingw32 ; then
CFLAGS="$CFLAGS -I${abs_srcdir}/win32/pthread ...
CFLAGS="$CFLAGS -I\${abs_srcdir}/win32/pthread ...
will do the right thing.
