In http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/libtool-patches/2005-01/msg00024.html, I proposed a patch against Libtool which makes use of $as_cr_alnum after calling AS_SHELL_SANITIZE (which isn't mentioned in autoconf.texi either, btw).
