setting CXXCPPFLAGS

I'm trying to configure a package with both C and C++ sources.  How do I 
set C++ preprocessor directives that will not be used by the c compiler 
 also (so I cannot set CPPFLAGS).  Is there a CXXCPPFLAGS variable?
